New FDA Review on Dermal Fillers

On Nov 18, 2008, the FDA reviewed the safety of dermal fillers.  The review panel concluded product labels on popular cosmetic wrinkle fillers should be strengthened to warn consumers about scarring and other problems that can occur weeks or years after receiving the treatments.

How concerned should consumers be when considering dermal fillers to plump facial lines and wrinkles?  As with any medical procedure, dermal fillers pose risks. However, most fillers are very safe and consumers should take a few precautions before moving ahead:

·        Pick you physician carefully – select a physician who is board certified in dermatology, facial plastic surgery or plastic surgery;

·        Ask questions about risks, benefits and alternatives – don’t just accept recommendations;

·        Don’t pick product or surgeon based on price – sometimes the more expensive products are more cost-effective.
